Guided Active Tourism Package.

Guided Active Tourism Package.

I´ve been fortunate enough to spend the past few days with two great clients from Rotterdam in The Netherlands.  Harry and his son Lars contacted me early this year to discuss the possibility of arranging a Guided Active Tourism Short Break prior to their family holiday in Valencia.  Both fit and keen bikers, they wanted to explore this beautiful area of Spain and to enjoy the mountains and countryside that it has to offer.  Following some discussion, I proposed an itinerary that would comprise a day of mountain walking and two days of mountain biking. On our first day together, [read more]

Combine Mountain Biking in Spain with a City Break, Rural Get-Away or Beach Holiday

Combine Mountain Biking in Spain with a City Break, Rural Get-Away or Beach Holiday

As it´s the time of year when thoughts are turning to the warmer months ahead and of holidays in the sun, we´re all thinking of how we can maximise our precious free time and of course value for our hard earned cash. These days, more people are opting for a vacation that provides the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities rather than just a beach holiday or sight-seeing trip. However, it´s often the case that to indulge in a favourite hobby whilst away, one has to opt for a specifically organised activity holiday.  Here at Nature Trail Spain, we recognise that such [read more]

Designing a New Guided Mountain Bike Route

Designing a New Guided Mountain Bike Route

In preparation for the forthcoming season, I have been working on a new Guided Mountain Bike Route that will now be added to our portfolio. This is one of our tougher routes as it includes some very steep ascents and takes in a remote and high mountain pass. I´ve been working on this one for a while, essentially trying to join up various off-road sections to form a circular route that minimises the amount of on-road work and makes the most of the rural tracks and trails. After 3 or 4 outings, today´s objective was to ride and record the entire [read more]

Guided Mountain Biking from La Drova.

Guided Mountain Biking from La Drova.

Today, I had the pleasure of introducing Mark, the owner of a local country hotel to the joys of mountain biking.  Although he´s an active sportsman, and a keen runner, he´s never been out on a mountain bike.  He admitted to having been keen to give mountain biking a try for a while, so a day of guided mountain biking from La Drova, our home base, proved to be a great introduction. He was provided with a helmet and fully equipped Trek mountain bike.  Following some initial instruction on bike set-up, efficient braking, pedaling and gear changing we set off along [read more]

Short Sharp Training Ride

Short Sharp Training Ride

A busy schedule dictated that I didn´t have a lot of time for a ride last Saturday but the day was perfect with blue skies and very little wind.  Therefore I decided (somewhat hesitantly) to do one of my short training rides.  Today I chose the very short but very steep ride up to the top of Monduver.  The route is very short, infact only a few kms but it´s straight uphill from my doorstep to the summit, a climb of almost 500 metres to the summit that stands at 841 metres above sea level. Despite the sustained steep climb, the [read more]

A Ride in the Winter Sunshine

A Ride in the Winter Sunshine

As part of my work as a Mountain Bike Guide, I regularly get out on my own to ride the routes that I´ve designed to check the trail condition and to develop new variations. Today was such a day but my objective was to ride a regular route in the opposite direction. It´s remarkable how riding a loop “the other way round” can completely change the route, often improving it. That was certainly the case today. As I loaded the bike into the van and set off from home the sky was beautifully clear and blue, although the outside temperature [read more]

Cycling in Albufera de Valencia - August 2011

Cycling in Albufera de Valencia – August 2011

Albufera de Valencia is a Natural Park just south of the city of Valencia. The area covers over 21,000 hectares and comprises a huge fresh water lake of 3,000 hectares in surface area, rice fields, reed beds, coastal wooded areas and a series of smaller ponds and canals. Although not an area associated with mountain biking (ie. it´s flat!) it can provide a good easy day out amongst some unique habitats. That´s exactly what Caroline, the lady who chose the route wanted – a good ride out that was comfortable yet rewarding. We entered the southern end of the Natural [read more]

Mountains of Albaida - July 2011

Mountains of Albaida – July 2011

I had the pleasure of taking a couple from Yorkshire out biking in the mountains of the Albaida region of Valencia today. They fancied a high level route to make the most of the stunning views in this area. The route that I chose has a tough start and climbs 400 metres in the initial 4km. However, for this time of year that´s perfect as provided that you´re out in good time, all the hard work is done before the sun is high in the sky. We set off at a good steady pace, climbing up the flanks of the [read more]
