Last weekend we provided a day of guided mountain biking for a couple of returning clients. They were enjoying a short break in this vibrant Mediterranean city and wanted to enjoy a day of guided mountain biking near the city of Valencia. Although a coastal city, one of its many advantages is its proximity to the mountains. Today´s route was in the Sierra de Calderona, a designated Natural Park within very easy reach of Valencia. Having collected my clients from their city centre hotel, within just 35 minutes we were unloading the bikes from the van and beginning our route.
The day began with a gentle warm-up along a very pretty lane, with views across the forests. We then soon began our climb up into the hills of the Sierra de Calderona, as we gained height we enjoyed some superb views of the forest, mountains and coastline stretching out beneath us.
The trail became a little rockier and steeper, and soon took us up into some very impressive mountain forests with high rocky outcrops and peaks on either side. After a lunch break, we relaxed for a while and enjoyed the beautiful Spring sunshine before completing the climb and pausing to enjoy the views of the Valencian coastline and peaks.
Our reward was a long and flowing descent which took us down through the forest before arriving at a small village where we stopped and enjoyed a cool beer in the cobbled square.
Once back at the van, we packed away the bikes and within 30 minutes we were back in the city of Valencia. To be based in this wonderful city is a privilege, and to be able to be up in the mountains in such a short time is a big advantage. For visitors who wish to combine some cross country mountain biking with a city break, Valencia is an ideal destination.
