Last week, I had the pleasure of providing a day of guided mountain biking in Alicante for a client from Holland. He was on holiday with his family in the coastal resort of Elche, and wanted to include a day of mountain biking in his plans. We´d arranged to meet in Banyeres de Mariola, a historical village in the hills of the Sierra de Mariola. Although just 45 minutes drive from Alicante, it´s rural location and stunning scenery make it feel as if it could be a World away. The area offers some fabulous cross country mountain biking as well as some fascinating cultural sites and some of the prettiest villages in the entire Valencian Community.
We began our route with a gentle but rocky descent into the valley, and after a short river crossing we climbed out onto the green pastures of Mariola. Having warmed up, we then took to a rocky trail that lead up through pine forest into the foothills of the surrounding peaks. A short road section then lead us to a very pretty picnic spot where we enjoyed lunch.
Well rested, we began our return leg with a rocky climb before enjoying a flowing descent along some great forested trails. The final stetch of the day was along a relatively wide but entertaining cross country trail, fast enough to be fun but demanding enough to be interesting.
The long ranging views of this stunning area with the peak of Montcabrer (1400 metres above sea level) in the distance proving a fitting end to a great day of guided mountain biking in Alicante.
